5th Open Para-badminton Championship begins in Umuahia

Umuahia, Abia State is set to host the National Open Para-badminton Championship which is slated for 14th to 18th July, 2025.

 

About one hundred athletes are already in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State for this event which is in its fifth edition. The championship will be held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia.

 

Addressing newsmen in a press conference on Sunday, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba said the Government is ready to host the tournament and has purchased state-of-the-art equipment to make the championship memorable for the athletes.

 

 

“Abia State is hosting. This is in readiness to prepare for the Abia First International Badminton Championship and also the All-African Para Badminton Championship. The First in West Africa, the First in Nigeria and, indeed, the First in Abia state,” Ananaba said.

 

“So we’re here to just let the world know that we are ready to host and also that, we are using this tournament to test our readiness in terms of equipment at this stage and also our athletes, also certification as well to make sure, we are fair in selecting athletes,” he concluded.

 

The opening ceremony will be on Monday, July 14 at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia
