Howard Webb, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief, says the decision to disallow Fulham’s goal against Chelsea on Saturday was a “misjudgement”.

Webb spoke while reacting to decisions made by referees at the weekend. Josh King scored for Fulham in the 22nd minute but his goal was cancelled after a lengthy intervention by video assistant referee (VAR) following a foul on Rodrigo by Muniz in the buildup, a decision which Webb believes was an error.

He said the PGMOL team have provided clear guidance to the referees but it was not followed in the case under review.

“In this situation, that guidance wasn’t followed properly. There was a misjudgement by the officials involved in this situation about how that contact happened between Muniz and Chalobah,” Webb said.

“The officials got super focused on that contact, without looking at the full context of how it happened.”

“Only be taking goals away when the evidence is very clear.

“It wasn’t controversial, it was wrong. We’ve established some principles in terms of how we officiate in the Premier League and how we use VAR.

“They sit around a high threshold for penalising contact, aiding the flow, rhythm and tempo of the game. We’ve also established a high bar for intervention with VAR.”

Chelsea won the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from Joao Pedro and a Enzo Fernandez. It was also the second time in two games this season that Chelsea would get advantage from VAR — the first was against Crystal Palace when they were denied a goal due to Guehi’s push in the box prior to Eze’s freekick.
