NSC pledges support for Team Nigeria as World Athletics begins

National Sports Commission (NSC) has promised total support for Team Nigeria as the 2025 World Athletics Championships begins this weekend in Tokyo.

Bukola Olopade, director general of NSC,  reaffirmed the Commission’s full support for Team Nigeria.

Team Nigeria left for the venue of the competition Tokyo on Wednesday as the competition is scheduled for September 13 to 21.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, Olopade emphasized the importance of athletics to Nigeria’s sporting development.

He noted that the NSC remains fully committed to ensuring success.

“From inception, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, declared that Nigeria must get it right in athletics,” Olopade said.

“This is a moment of pride for our nation, and we trust our athletes to compete with determination and secure podium finishes.”

He stated further:” The Commission will continue to provide all the support they need and firmly stand behind them as they fly our flag in Tokyo.”

Olopade further highlighted that the athletes represent the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

He and stressed that the NSC’s priority is to guarantee they excel.

“We want them to know they are not alone. The NSC, the government, and the people of Nigeria are fully behind them,” he added.

The NSC boss confirmed he will be present in Tokyo to lead from the front.

This is to serve a motivation for Nigeria’s athletes to enjoy a seamless championship experience both on and off the track.

Nigeria will parade a strong 15-member squad.

The team is spearheaded by world record holder Tobi Amusan and Commonwealth Games champion Ese Brume.

The 15 man team includes a mix of seasoned athletes and emerging stars competing across sprints, jumps, throws, and hurdles.

Men: Kayinsola Ajayi, Israel Sunday Okon, Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike, Samuel Ogazi, Chidi Okezie, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Charles Godfred, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.

Women: Rosemary Chukwuma, Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Prestina Ochonogor, Obiageri Amaechi, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, Oyesade Olatoye.

Nigeria will aim to surpass its 2022 exploits when Amusan set the 100m hurdles world record and Brume claimed long jump silver.
