FA charges Crystal Palace over offensive Marinakis banner

The Football Association has charged Crystal Palace with misconduct after fans displayed a provocative banner depicting Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis holding a gun to midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White’s head.

The banner, unfurled during the 1–1 Premier League draw at Selhurst Park in August, read:

“Mr Marinakis is not involved in blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking or corruption.”

Marinakis has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in relation to such allegations.

The FA confirmed that Palace have been charged with failing to ensure their supporters did not engage in “improper, offensive, abusive, or provocative” behaviour.

While the banner was not explicitly cited in the charge, the FA maintains strict rules prohibiting defamatory, political, or offensive messages.

Gibbs-White was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur over the summer, with reports suggesting Spurs had triggered a £60 million release clause.

However, the midfielder opted to remain at Forest, signing a new contract and discussing the decision in an interview alongside Marinakis.

The August 24 fixture was the first meeting between Palace and Forest since Palace were relegated from the Europa League to the Conference League for breaching UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules — a development that saw Forest take their place in the competition.

Crystal Palace have until Tuesday to respond to the FA’s charge.
