Manchester United are facing a unique legal action after a man who worked for the club as a kitman was accused of sexual abuse.

According to the BBC, the claims were made against Billy Watts who worked at the club’s Cliff training ground in the 1980s. He died in 2009 but the club is facing legal action 16 years later.

The civil case was brought before the club by a man who alleges that he was abused when he was a child and he accused the club of failing to protect him while he was under their care. Kate Hall, abuse law expert at Simpson Millar, the legal firm representing the unnamed man, commended him for his bravery.

“Our client has shown enormous courage in coming forward after so many years.

“Survivors deserve more than sympathy – they deserve meaningful engagement and accountability,” she said.

Manchester United declined to comment on the matter when they were approached by the BBC for their side of the story.
