Adeshina Zainab Motunrayo, Nigeria’s sole pugilist at the 6th Saudi Solidarity Games, bagged a silver medal in the squared ropes on Monday.
Zainab fought for the gold but succumbed to Turkey’s Rabia Topuz in the women’s 51kg final. The bout was stopped in the third round by the referee after Zainab received two counts in the said round.
She has earlier defeated Algeria’s Mansouri Fatiha (4-1) in the semi-finals. The Nigerian boxing contingent led by Oyeleye Abayomi as coach, has Ridwan (Male, 65kg) welterweight and Adeshina Zainab (51kg female) in the flyweight category.
Ridwan lost in the semi-finals to Uzbekistan’s Abdullahi Madaminov by split decision (4-1) after three rounds in the men’s (65kg) contest.
The team received praises from Omonlei Imadu, Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) and assured them of the body’s support for Nigeria to dominate in the events in subsequent editions.
