African Sports Ministers back Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games bid

African Ministers of Sports have thrown their weight behind Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2031 African Games, sportresonance.com reports.

The African Ministers of Sports under the auspices of the African Union Commission held a virtual conference on Friday, 29th August 2025 where they assured of their support for Nigeria’s bid.

Nigeria’s representative and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko informed the Council of the country’s bid for the games and solicited their support.

Dikko, who also doubles as President-in-office/Chairman of the Council of Sports Ministers of AUSC region 2 (West Africa) urged them to regard Nigeria’s bid as an African bid.

He further disclosed that the country is discussing with the African Union Sports Council on the bids. He expressed appreciation to the council for granting Nigeria the rights for hosting the 2027 African Youth Games.

The Chairperson of the meeting, Uchizi Mkandawire, Malawi’s Minister of Youth and Sports assured Nigeria that the council will support the bids.
