Aryna Sabalenka named WTA player of the season

Aryna Sabalenka, World number one, has been voted the Women’s Tennis Association ( WTA) player of the season. 

This is her second successive WTA player of the season award. Sabalenka won four titles, including the US Open title triumph in September against Amanda Anisimova.

 

She won the Brisbane International in January, the Miami Open in March and the Madrid Open in May. She spent the entire year as World number one. She also became the first player to top 12000 WTA ranking points.

 

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic was voted comeback player of the year after returning to the sport, 13 months after childbirth while Canada’s 19-year-old Victoria Mboko got the newcomer of the year award.

 

Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend were voted doubles team of the year after winning their Second Grand Slam together. Anisimova was named the most improved player of the year after reaching five finals
