Nigeria claimed ten (10) medals to secure second place overall as the athletics programme of the 4th African Youth Games (AYG) concluded in Angola, finishing behind South Africa.

Team Nigeria wrapped up the competition with an impressive haul of six gold and four silver medals.

The girls were the standout performers for Nigeria, accounting for four of the six gold medals and underlining their dominance at the Games, while the boys contributed the remaining two gold medals to complete the tally.

With this result, Team Nigeria remains among the continent’s elite at youth level, ranking fourth on the all-time AYG athletics medals table with a cumulative record of 18 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals.

South Africa once again asserted its authority in youth athletics, topping the medals table with 11 gold medals.

Egypt finished third in Angola with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

Overall, athletes from 19 countries made the podium.

Competition continues in other events as the Africa Youth Games will end on Saturday 20 December 2025.
