FC Barcelona returned to Camp Nou for the first time in two years and marked it with a resounding victory over Athletic Club on Saturday.

The fixture was their first at Sportify Camp Nou in 990 days after the stadium was closed for renovation and expansions. Expectations were positive about the imminent return, with Lionel Messi posting a picture of himself at the ground.

Robert Lewandowski opened scoring in the 4th minute after he fired in a shot at the near post and the 45,000 fans erupted in joy. In the final minute of stoppage time of the first half, Ferran Torres scored the second for Barcelona.

Firmin Lopez added to the euphoria at the stadium when he scored a third goal for the Catalans and Athletic Club’s woes were further compounded when Oihan Sancet was sent off after a dangerous swipe on Fermin Lopez.

A major highlight of the game was the return of Raphinha who was out injured. Lamine Yamal produced a stunning assist for Ferran Torres as the striker got his brace of the evening and the fourth for Barcelona on the day.

The win temporarily moves Barcelona to the top of the La Liga for at least 24 hours, due to a better goal difference than Real Madrid.
