CAFCL: Finidi hails Rivers United’s defensive solidity after Les Aigles draw

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has praised his team’s defensive solidity after they battled to a hard-fought goalless draw against Les Aigles du Congo in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie on Saturday in Kinshasa.

The Pride of Rivers stood firm under sustained pressure from the Congolese side.

Rivers United displayed a discipline, composure, and organization to keep a crucial clean sheet away from home.

Despite being pinned back for long spells, especially in the second half, Rivers United maintained their structure and frustrated the hosts.

The Nigerian side’s defensive solidity now gives them a strong leg ahead of the decisive return leg in Uyo

“It was a very good result for us in a very difficult game,” Finidi said after the match.

“We had to defend a lot, especially in the second half when we dropped deeper than expected, but the players were determined not to concede.”

“We also tried to push forward whenever possible to get a goal, but overall, I think we defended very well and achieved our target of avoiding defeat.”

The former Super Eagles winger acknowledged that Les Aigles du Congo controlled more of the ball.

However, he stressed that his side’s composure and discipline under pressure were key to securing the clean sheet.

“They had more possession and tried to push us back, but we stayed organized, limited their chances, and kept a clean sheet,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Finidi expressed confidence that Rivers United can take advantage of playing at home.

“Next week, we will adjust our strategy and play with more attacking intent. Our aim is to get the win we need to advance to the next round,” Finidi said.

The former Super Eagles forward also appreciated the Nigerian supporters present in Kinshasa for their encouragement.
