Wang Jianan, China’s world champion and long jumper, has been cleared of doping after a review of hospital CCTV footage.
The 29-year-old became the first Asian man to win world long jump gold with an 8.36m leap in Oregon in 2022. In 2024, he failed an out-of-competition doping test.
After the test was done, traces of terbuline, a drug primarily used to treat and prevent breathing problems in patients with asthma, was found by the AIU.
The China Anti-Doping Agency (Chinada) said the presence of the drug was caused by passive inhalation while Wang accompanied his relative to hospital for nebuliser treatment.
The decision was reviewed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after Chinada decided that Wang bore no fault or negligence for the violence and would not be banned.
The AIU used hospital security footage and patient records to investigate Wang’s movements before his drug test. The body sought the opinion of a scientific expert who concluded that a “passive transfer of the substance to the athlete could not be excluded.”
The AIU also agreed with Chinada and ruled that there was nothing suspicious about the documents and the CCTV footage submitted by Chinada.
