Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has qualified for the men’s shot put final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Enekwechi produced two powerful throws of 20.83m, finishing 5th in Group A and 7th overall during qualification as the event started early saturday morning.
He secured a third consecutive appearance in a global championship final.
The feat further solidify his reputation among the world’s leading Shot Put athletes.
Enekwechi currently holds the Nigerian and African Shot Put record with a massive throw of 22.10m recorded on July 5, 2025, in Lagos.
He will now challenge a world-class field featuring New Zealand’s Tom Walsh (21.74m).
Others are America’s Adrian Piperi (21.47m), USA’s Ryan Crouser (21.37m), and Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri (20.95m).
The renaming finalists include Scott Lincoln (GBR), Wictor Petersson (SWE), Josh Awotunde (USA), Uziel Muñoz (MEX), Tomáš Staněk (CZE), Marcus Thomsen (NOR), and Konrad Bukowiecki (POL).
Meanwhile, in the women’s Discus event, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons failed to progress after registering an opening throw of 59.45m.
The American based athlete fouled her remaining two attempts.
She placed 12th in her qualification group, effectively ending her campaign at the world championships.
Obiageri Amaechi was Nigeria’s first competitor in action, starting with 55.69m before following up with 48.82m, but failed to find consistency throughout.
Amaechi, who entered the championships after a promising season, ultimately finished 16th in Group A.
It should be noted that her first throw was her best mark overall.
Nigeria’s medal hopes in the throwing events now rest firmly on Enekwechi.
He will aim to surpass his qualification mark and push strongly for a podium finish in the men’s Shot Put final.
