England produced a commanding display to defeat Canada 33-13 at Twickenham and claim the Women’s Rugby World Cup for the third time.

In front of a record women’s rugby crowd of 81,885, the Red Roses erased the disappointment of two consecutive final defeats to New Zealand with a powerful and composed performance.

The victory also extended their record winning run to 33 matches, with their last loss coming in the 2022 final.

Match Summary

Canada (8) 13

Tries: Hogan-Rochester 2 | Pen: De Goede

England (21) 33

Tries: Kildunne, Cokayne, Matthews 2, Ward | Cons: Harrison 4

England had to recover from an early try by Canada’s Asia Hogan-Rochester, but Ellie Kildunne’s stunning solo effort turned the tide.

Hooker Amy Cokayne and number eight Alex Matthews added first-half tries, with Sophie de Goede’s penalty keeping Canada in touch.

Lock Abbie Ward crossed soon after the break before Hogan-Rochester struck again to reduce the deficit.

However, Matthews powered over for her second score to seal victory.

England Rise to the Occasion

Head coach John Mitchell, appointed in 2023, instilled a winning mentality that carried his team through the decisive moments.

England’s forwards dominated the set-piece while their defence, led by captain Zoe Aldcroft, repelled Canadian attacks with resilience.

The triumph ends an 11-year wait since England’s last World Cup crown in 2014, which also came against Canada.

Canada’s Journey

Canada entered the final on the back of a famous semi-final victory over New Zealand and had raised almost $1 million through their “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup” campaign.

Despite showing flashes of brilliance, they were ultimately outmuscled by the top-ranked side.

A Landmark Year for Women’s Sport

England’s triumph adds to a remarkable year for women’s sport in the country, following the Lionesses’ successful defence of their European football title in July.
