Super Eagles’ chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs improved after CAF clarified playoff rules following Eritrea’s withdrawal from Group E.
In a circular dated March 14, 2025, and signed by CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, Samson Adamu, the governing body announced adjustments to ensure fairness in selecting the four best runners-up across the nine qualifying groups.
Eritrea’s exit, which reduced one group to five teams, necessitated the review.
CAF explained that when a group has fewer than five teams due to withdrawal or disqualification, results against the bottom-ranked or withdrawn sides will not count when comparing second-placed teams.
This measure, aligned with Article 11.5 of the FIFA 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations, guarantees consistency and competitive balance in determining playoff qualifiers.
Eritrea’s withdrawal marks the first major disruption in Africa’s qualifying campaign for the expanded 48-team World Cup, which initially featured 54 nations divided into nine groups of six. Under the format, group winners automatically qualify.
The four best runners-up advance to a continental playoff for a potential intercontinental slot.
The revised formula could favor Nigeria, who currently trail in their group after dropping crucial points against Zimbabwe. With CAF’s decision to disregard results against the lowest-ranked teams, the Super Eagles’ playoff chances have received a timely boost.
However, Nigeria must still win their remaining fixtures against Lesotho and Benin to sustain hopes of qualification. Though an automatic ticket remains mathematically possible, the playoff path appears more realistic.
CAF reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and sporting integrity, emphasizing that the adjustment ensures all teams compete on equal footing despite unforeseen withdrawals.
