The Netherlands produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup history after edging to book a semi final spot.

Netherlands scored twice deep into stoppage time to draw 2-2 with France before triumphing 7-6 in a tense penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals.

France appeared to be in full control after goals from Rachael Adedini and Luna Laboucarie, but Rochelity Dap and Ranneke Derks struck late to rescue the Dutch. Goalkeeper Maren Groothoff, who had earlier erred, turned hero by saving Noemie Fatier’s decisive penalty to seal the win.

It has been a dramatic journey for the Netherlands, who only reached the knockout stage by finishing fourth among the best third-placed teams. Since then, they have stunned the favorite USA and now France, emerging as one of the tournament favourites.

Head coach Olivier Amelink praised his side’s resilience, saying: “Every time people think it’s over, this group keeps believing and working for each other. It’s a very special team.”

Derks, who was named Player of the Match, added: “My goal took us into the shootout, and now we’re going to the semi-final — that’s what matters most.”

In the day’s other quarter-final, Mexico edged Italy 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Goalkeeper Valentina Murrieta was the hero, saving two spot-kicks in regulation time and another in the shootout to secure El Tri’s progress and claim the Player of the Match award.

“I had so much faith in my teammates,” said Murrieta. “I just told myself, if I can stop one, that’s enough.”

The Netherlands will now face Mexico in what promises to be a high-stakes semi-final on 5 November in Rabat.
