Gov. Makinde rewards Falconets with 15K dollars after Rwanda rout in FIFA U20 qualifier

Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor, on Saturday rewarded Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, with 15,000 dollars following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Rwanda in the second leg of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

The two-time World Cup runners-up secured a 5-0 aggregate triumph, advancing to the third round where they will face either Senegal or Algeria in February 2026.

Precious Oscar opened the scoring in the 12th minute after being set up by winger Tessy Ojiyovwi, who had tormented the Rwandan defense all afternoon.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 20th minute when defender Tumininu Adeshina’s corner kick was misjudged by goalkeeper Iramuzi Belise and found its way into the net.

Midfielder Janet Akekoromowei extended the lead in the 60th minute with a precise grounder that left Belise stranded.

Substitute Alaba Olabiyi, who scored in the first leg in Kigali, wrapped up the victory in the 90th minute after connecting with Taiwo Afolabi’s strike.

The Falconets displayed relentless energy, creating several chances through Oscar, Akekoromowei, and Ojiyovwi, while Belise pulled off key saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

A goal from Ojiyovwi was ruled offside in the 65th minute, denying Nigeria an earlier fourth.

Governor Makinde, visibly delighted with the performance, praised the Falconets’ commitment and assured them of continued support as they push for another World Cup appearance.

His cash reward was presented immediately after the match in recognition of their outstanding display.

With their qualification secured, the Falconets now turn their focus to the next round as the chase for 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup tickets continue.
