The eighth Lagos International Badminton Classics (LIBC) began on Wednesday at the Indoor Sports of the Teslim Balogun Stadium with 64 matches played across four courts.
India which came with the largest foreign contingent made their intentions known with 32 victories on the opening day.
Kalagotla of India beat Nigeria’d Rufai in the round of 64 in just 18 minutes. In the men’s singles, Yoo of South Korea beat tournament’s number two seed, Maisham of India in straight sets, 21-8, 21-9 in the round of 32 in what proved to be a major upset.
Indonesia’s Muhammad Yusuf produced a stunning upset to beat top seed N. Mueller of Switzerland in the round of 16, winning in just 42 minutes. Equatorial Guinea’s O. Solomon also knocked out Indian number six seed, L. Kalagotla in straight sets (21-11, 21-18) in the men’s singles round of 16.
In the women’s event, Nigeria’s number one and tournament second seed S. Obanisola defeat her compatriot Ilori in the round of 16 while Obasanmi walked over America’d Gupta.
