Israel Okon is the new men’s national champion after a thrilling victory at the 2025 World Championships National Trials in Lagos.
Okon ran in a keenly contested final and won with a time of 10.04s. He beat Alaba Akintola who finished second in 10.05s. Alaba thought he had won the race but Israel’s torso had crossed the line first by just a millisecond. Adekalu Fakorede came third in 10.07s, while Seye Ogunlewe finished fourth in 10.08s
The final edged by Israel Okon proved to be a tight one as all top four finishers could have won the race and ran an impressive sub 10.10s. Kanyinsola Ajayi withdrew before the semifinal and all eyes were on Tokyo 2020 Olympian, Enoch Adegoke who finished seventh in a distant 10.20s.
In the men’s 400m semifinals, Gafar Badmus ran 46.93s to win his heat while Ezekiel Asuquo won his semifinal in 47.07s.
Tobi Amusan won her heat in the women’s 100m repechage in a time of 11.28s while Success Oyibu won in 11.59s, Azeezat Muhammed-Raji won her heat with a personal best of 11.83s while Ejiro Peter won hers in 11.67s.
Nnamdi Onwaeze won the national title in the 110m hurdles in 14.13s, beating Wisdom Great Musa who finished in 14.19s, falling shot of his personal best of 13.73s which he set in the heats
