Lagos hosts Africa’s first All-electric powerboat championship

Lagos made history on Saturday , October 4, by hosting the E1 Lagos GP Grand Prix, Africa’s first-ever all-electric powerboat championship, at the scenic Lagos Lagoon.

The groundbreaking event showcased Nigeria’s growing commitment to sustainability, featuring zero-emission RaceBird hydrofoils capable of reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h.

In an action-packed opening race, Team Brazil stole the spotlight with a stunning overtake to claim victory in Group 1, while Westbrook Racing surged to the top of the combined standings.

Defending champions Team Qatar trailed closely, just a single point behind, setting the stage for a tense finale on Sunday.

The E1 Lagos GP  drew widespread attention from global sports enthusiasts and dignitaries alike.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu both lauded the championship, describing it as a significant step toward advancing Nigeria’s blue economy and clean energy innovation.
