Manchester United stunned Anfield on Sunday as Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a dramatic 2–1 victory over Liverpool — their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
United made eased to their first win at Anfield since 2016 with a dream start when Bryan Mbeumo struck inside two minutes, silencing the home crowd. Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool midway through the second half, sparking hopes of a comeback.
However Maguire’s decisive goal from a corner ended those hopes and handed Erik ten Hag’s side back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season.
The defeat marks a worrying run for Arne Slot’s men, who have now lost four straight matches in all competitions — their worst streak since November 2014.
Despite dominating possession and Gakpo hitting the post, Liverpool failed to break through a resolute United defence.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Maguire said resilience was key to the win:
“Staying in the game when they scored that equaliser was crucial. They had pressure in the second half, but we stayed calm. We could have gone under, but we stuck together — that’s the most pleasing thing.”
Liverpool’s set-piece struggles continued, with Maguire’s goal meaning they have now conceded five goals from dead-ball situations in their first eight league games this season — a stark contrast to last season, when they didn’t concede any in the same period under Slot.
For Manchester United, the victory could signal a turning point in their campaign, while for Liverpool, urgent defensive questions remain ahead of a tough run of fixtures.
