Mbappé , others reach New Champions League milestones

It was a night of milestones across Europe as some of the continent’s biggest stars – Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen – all etched their names deeper into Champions League history with landmark goals on Matchday 2.

At the Metropolitano, Antoine Griezmann marked his 200th goal for Atlético Madrid in spectacular fashion.

The Frenchman struck on the stroke of half-time as Diego Simeone’s men dismantled Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 to record their first group-stage victory.

Griezmann celebrated by unveiling a “Grizi 200” shirt to the roaring crowd, a fitting tribute to his legacy at the club he first joined in 2014 and rejoined in 2022.

Earlier, Giacomo Raspadori and Robin Le Normand had given Atleti a commanding lead, while Julian Alvarez starred with two assists and a late Panenka penalty.

In Kazakhstan, Kylian Mbappé delivered another masterclass, scoring a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 5-0 rout of Kairat Almaty.

The France captain converted an early penalty, added a clever dink in the second half, and sealed his treble late on to reach 60 Champions League goals,

Mbappe overtook Thomas Müller and climbing to sixth on the all-time scorers’ chart.

Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz added gloss to the scoreline, as Xabi Alonso’s men bounced back emphatically from their weekend defeat to Atlético in La Liga.

Elsewhere, Harry Kane continued his relentless form, netting twice in Bayern Munich’s 5-1 win away at Pafos.

The England skipper has now scored 102 goals in 105 matches since joining Bayern in 2023.

His brace, alongside goals from Raphael Guerreiro, Nicolas Jackson and Michael Olise, ensured the German champions made it nine wins from nine this season.

Kane’s tally of 17 goals in nine matches underlines why he remains one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.

In Istanbul, Victor Osimhen etched his name into Nigerian football folklore, scoring his 10th Champions League goal with a composed penalty in Galatasaray’s 1-0 win over Liverpool.

The strike not only gave the Turkish giants a famous victory but also saw Osimhen become the all-time Nigerian top scorer in the competition.

Osimhen surpassed  Obafemi Martins. Remarkably, he is also the first Nigerian to score for three different clubs in the tournament.

For Liverpool, it was another disappointing night as Mohamed Salah started on the bench and goalkeeper Alisson limped off injured.

Despite late pressure and a VAR drama that denied them a penalty, the Premier League champions fell to a second successive defeat.

From Madrid to Munich, Istanbul to Madrid, the night belonged to the men who thrive on Europe’s grandest stage – legends in the making, each rewriting history one goal at a time.
