Former US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev has been sanctioned for his outburst on Sunday in a first round exit at this year’s tournament.

The 29-year-old caused a stir in his match with Benjamin Bonzi of France when a photographer walked into the court and his reaction was condemned by organizers for stirring the crowd to chaos.

He was fined $41,000 by the United States Tennis Association. He was also docked $30,000 for unsportsmanlike behaviour and $12,500 for smashing a racket against a chair. This means he will forfeit 40% of his prize money for the first round.

After the photographer walked into the court inadvertently, Medvedev thought he would get advantage against Bonzi but umpire, Greg Allensworth awarded another serve to Bonzi and the Russian lost his cool.

He went over to the official to confront him, then the crowd joined and the arena turned chaotic. He later lost the game to the French man.
