Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress have started their 2025 FIBA Afrobasket title defense on a positive note, setting a strong tone with a 92-45 defeat of Rwanda.
D’Tigress showcased their superior depth and skill, taking the first quarter 17-8 and extending their lead in the second with a 28-17 scoreline.
‎The Rena Wakama led team equally dominated the third quarter, establishing a 26-12 point lead, giving Rwanda no opportunity to mount a comeback.
Nigeria still held sway in the fourth quarter, outscoring Rwanda 21-8 to seal a commanding victory and start their campaign in style.
D’Tigress who are Africa’s top-ranked team, have won the last four editions of the tournament and remain the team to beat.
‎The win was propelled by standout performances from key players such as Elizabeth Balogun, who led the charge with 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Victoria Macaulay contributed 13 points, three rebounds, and a team-high five assists with Murjanatu Musa adding 12 points and five rebounds.
Ifunaya Okoro rounded out the top performers with 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists as Africa’s top team sent a message to other contenders.
Nigeria will face Mozambique next on Monday at 4 p.m, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.
