Nigeria has submitted its bid to the African Union Sports Council (A USC) to host the 2031 African Games.

This bid comes 22 years after Nigeria hosted the COJA games in 2003. The bid presentation was made during high-level engagements with AUSC. Mainasara Ilo, veteran sportscaster and administrator,  presented the bid to the AUSC.

The country has successfully hosted international events which includes; the CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championship, Africa Karate Championship, ITTF Africa Youth Table Tennis Championship, African Armwrestling Championship, Badminton National Open, West Africa Para Games and the African Cadet and Junior Taekwondo Championship.

According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), Nigeria’s hosting of the CAA U18/U20 Championship benefited over 5,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) due to increased patronage.

Nigeria lost its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games to India and has now shifted its attention to hosting the African Games, which is Africa’s version of the Olympics.
