The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has imposed sanctions on Ekiti Queens for assault on the match referees in their 1-0 home loss to Edo Queens on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, a video went viral online, showing the match officials being assaulted after the home team’s loss. In a swift reaction, the NWFL has described the incident as a severe violation of the league safety and conduct regulations.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Samuel Ahmadu, Media Director of the NWFL, the club was found guilty of multiple breaches of league regulations and failure to provide adequate security and failure to control their supporters.
Consequently, the club has been fined a total of ₦2.5 million for the varying breaches.
In addition, they will also play their next three home games at a neutral venue – the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta. The NWFL appealed to home teams, state football associations and matchday organisers to strengthen their security architecture for the new season.
