South Africa have unveiled a strong 49-athlete squad for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, with Nigerian-born stars John Adesola and Udeme Okon proudly included.
Their selection highlights South Africa’s multicultural strength, with both athletes carrying deep Nigerian heritage into the global stage.
The team heads into Tokyo with confidence, boasting three world-leading marks.
Zakeite Nene’s 43.73 seconds in the men’s 400m, alongside dominance in the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Akani Simbine spearheads the men’s 100m squad with Bayanda Walaza and Gift Leotlela, as South Africa push for sprint glory. Wayde van Niekerk returns in the 200m, teaming up with Sinesipho Dambile and Naeem Jack.
In the 400m, Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay will battle for medals. Middle-distance hopes rest on Tshepo Tshite and Ryan Mphahlele, while Adriaan Wildschutt targets success in the 10,000m.
Prudence Sekgodiso anchors the women’s 800m team, while Shirley Nekhubui and Miranda Coetzee strengthen the 400m lineup.
Marione Fourie runs the 100m hurdles, with Zenéy van der Walt and Rogail Joseph contesting the 400m hurdles.
Endurance specialist Jessica Groenewalt represents in the 35km race walk.
Field Events Promise Fireworks
Cheswill Johnson leads in the long jump, while Brian Raats competes in the high jump. Shot put duties fall to Aiden Smith and Chris van Niekerk, with Victor Hogan handling discus. Kyle Rademeyer aims high in pole vault.
For women, Ashley Erasmus, Miné de Klerk, and Colette Uys strengthen the shot put team, with Miré Reinstorf in pole vault and Jo-Ané du Plessis in javelin.
Relay Hopes Stay Alive
The men’s 4x100m team includes Shaun Maswanganyi, while the men’s 4x400m features Sabelo Dhlamini.
The mixed 4x400m event showcases Udeme Okon alongside Precious Molepo, Hannah van Niekerk, and others.
