Super Eagles crash out of CHAN after heavy defeat to Sudan

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were on Tuesday night hammered 4-0 by Sudan to crash out of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Zanzibar.

The CHAN Eagles began the game on a pacy note, dominating possession and in search of an early goal but they failed to hit any effort on target in the opening moments of the game despite few incursions into Sudan’s half.

The boys thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute after a quick counter attack was brilliantly finished off by Anthony Ijoma but the goal was chalked off by VAR after the scorer was adjudged to be offside.

Sudan got their opener three minutes after when Leonard Ngenge turned the ball into his own net after the ball came off the bar with Mustapha Lawal already beaten. Sudan made it 2-0 in the 44th minute when Walieldin Khidir converted from the spot after Ngenge handled the ball in the box.

The Eagles returned for the second half hoping for a turnaround but that was not to be as Ahmed Tabanja scored in the 55th and 62nd minute to hand Nigeria their joint heaviest defeat at the CHAN tournament as they crash out of the tournament.

The Eagles will now play their final group game against Congo on Tuesday, 19th August 2025
