Super Eagles drop in new FIFA Rankings

Nigeria’s Super Eagles slipped one place to 45th in the latest FIFA World Ranking after the conclusion of the September international windows.

The three-time African champions now risk missing another World Cup, having endured disappointing results in Group C of the African qualifiers.

Earlier this month, Nigeria defeated Rwanda 1–0 in Uyo before managing a battling 1–1 draw against South Africa away.

Despite those efforts, their overall standing remained unimproved, leaving questions about consistency, quality, and the ability to overcome determined African opposition.

Nigeria currently occupies third position with 11 points from eight matches, trailing group leaders South Africa by a decisive six points.

Only the group winners earn automatic tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

For survival, Nigeria must claim maximum points in their final fixtures: against Lesotho away and Benin Republic at home.

Victory in both games might restore hope, but Nigeria’s qualification destiny depends heavily on other group outcomes beyond their control.

Should Nigeria fail to top the group, they could still qualify via playoffs reserved for the four best African runners-up.

The sole winner of the playoff advance to an intercontinental showdown, where one remaining ticket offers salvation for struggling nations seeking World Cup redemption.
