Tokyo 2025: Okon, Ajayi advance to men’s 100m semi finals

Israel Okon and Kanyinsola Ajayi are through to the semi final in the men’s 100m event at the World Athletics Championships in Japan.

Okon, who was running in his first major senior competition ran an impressive 10.04s to win his heat, beating Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes (10.6s) and Olympic Champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy (10.20s).

 

Ajayi produced a season and personal best to finish at a 9.88s, just 0.2s off the national record held by Olusoji Fasuba. He finished just 0.1s behind South Africa’s Gift Leotlela who won the heat at 9.87s.

 

In the women’s 100m, Rosemary Chukwuma was Nigeria’s sole representative. She finished 5th in her heat with a time of 11.27s in a race won by Jamaica’s Tia Clayton in 11.01s.

 

Chukwuebueka Enekwechi secured his best finish at the World Championships and the Olympics with a throw of 21.52m but finished fifth. America’s Ryan Crouser won gold with 22.34.
