Christantus Uche expressed confidence about his future impact at Crystal Palace after a lively late six minutes debut during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Sunderland.
The 22-year-old, who joined Palace from Getafe on transfer deadline day, entered the game in the 84th minute at Selhurst Park.
Tasked with providing attacking spark against a well-organised Sunderland side, Uche nearly delivered, producing a clever cross and later testing goalkeeper Robin Roefs with a sharp half-volley.
Although the match ended 0-0, Uche left the pitch encouraged.
Speaking to Palace TV he reflected:
“The game was good, but it’s not the result we wanted. We tried to put in all the work, but it didn’t come off. Nevertheless, we keep working every day to get it right.”
The Nigerian forward also praised the home supporters for their instant backing.
“The fans are good. I heard them shouting ‘Uche, Uche’ – that motivated me more. Once the fans trust me, I’ll always give 100 percent.”
Uche revealed the words of encouragement given by manager Oliver Glasner before he came on.
“He told me to go in there and make it right. He’s a great coach and he believes in me, so I had to give my best.”
“I believe once I’m on the field, I’ll make something that will surprise everybody. It didn’t happen today, but hopefully in the next game it will.”
Uche’s adaptation has been quick, despite spending much of the past two weeks on international duty with Nigeria.
The forward earned his third Super Eagles cap in a crucial World Cup qualifier earlier this week before returning to South London.
He also praised his new teammates for helping him settle in.
“They are so good to me. Even Mateta is funny – the guy is funny! All of them are good players. I hope that if we work together, we’ll make something better.”
With his debut behind him and the backing of his coach, teammates, and fans, Uche is determined to make his mark in the Premier League this season.
