WAFCON 2024: Super Falcons held by Algeria in last group game

Nigeria’s Super Falcons maintained their unbeaten run in the 2024 WAFCON after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Algeria on Sunday night.

 

Justin Madugu, head coach of the team made eight changes to the team which started the past two games as the team were already through to the quarterfinals. Miracle Usani, Isah Sikiratu and Shukurat Oladipo made their WAFCON debuts.

 

The Falcons started dominating from the blast of the whistle but failed to make the best use of their chances with Ifeoma Onumonu and Echegini missing chances to put the Falcons ahead.

 

Justin Madugu made changes in the second half. Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, Rinsola Babajide came in but their efforts were not enough as the team laboured to break down the Algerian defense.

Algerian goalkeeper Chloe N’gazi denied Ordega a second time from close range, after denying her from a cornerkick which was headed for the net in the first half.

 

After being held by Algeria, the Super Falcons will now play against Zambia in the quarterfinal on Thursday having finished as Group B winners.
