Coco Gauff says she needs to be positive despite a disappointing defeat by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in straight sets at the 2025 Wimbledon Open.
The world no. 2 tried hard to hold back tears in her press conference. She lost to 42nd ranked Yastremska in just one hour and 19 minutes. Gauf felt she could have done better with her serves
“I’m trying to be positive. After the match, I definitely was struggling in the locker room I don’t like losing. I know my team is gonna tell me ‘you did well at Roland Garros. Don’t be so upset. I feel a bit disappointed with how I showed up today,” said Gauf.
Gauf was undone by losing the tiebreak after fighting to bring the first set to 5-5. Yastremska proved too strong for the American and powered home to victory. The disappointment was written over Gauf’s face as she failed in her bid to get a third grand slam.
“I could have been a bit better in those tough tiebreaker moments. Especially after Roland Garros where I feel like I learned a lot in those tiebreakers,” said Gauf.
“So yeah, obviously I’m not going to dwell on this too long because I want to do well at US Open. Maybe losing here in the first round isn’t the worst thing in the world because I have some time to reset. But yeah, it definitely sucks,” a disappointed Gauf said.
The French Open champion joined a list of upsets at Wimbledon after Alexander Zverev, Jessica Pegula, Daniil Medvedez and Paulo were shown the exit door early in the first round at the All England Club
